Azusa Peak

Azusa Peak

Azusa Peak from Azusa Cross trailhead is a rare hike requiring a journey down to reach your destination. The hike, which follows a fire road the entire way, has some mild ups and downs before the final descent to the peak. While some research on the hike indicated a blah rating, I found it enjoyable with the non-stop views of the San Gabriels. Despite being slightly hazy on the LA side, it was still clear enough to see San Gorgonio, downtown LA, Catalina, and the Pacific Ocean. A bench welcomes you at the peak to soak in the views beyond the cross. There is little shade (unless you go early) so the trip is ideal for late fall, winter, or early spring. One big MUST - always check the status of Glendora Mountain Road prior to going - I struck out twice previously because I didn't check. http://dpw.lacounty.gov/roadclosures/
