Cone Peak in Big Sur

Hiking Cone Peak on a Big Sur road trip

Start early (we did at 6:30am) to have the majority of the trail in the shade for the ascent. Easy trail with lots of poison oak in the first 1/2-mile (have the kids keep a straight line). The dirt road (Forest Rr. 22S05) that leaves Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd. is passable with 2WD (we saw a number of 2WD cars make it to the trailhead). The hike is 4.5 miles round trip.  Bonus footage of camping and beach life around Big Sur on a road trip.
  • Trailhead:

Take the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road from Highway 1 for 7.1 miles until Forest Service Road 22S05, turn right and go 5.3 miles to the signed trailhead at 36.042486, -121.483704
