Mt. Tyndall

Mt. Tyndall & Mt. Williamson

Over Shepherd Pass, camped at 12,000 ft. This straight forward route for Tyndall starts close to the base of a prominent ridge that descends from the summit northward to a point approximately a half mile to the west of Shepherd pass. Ascend the west (right) side of this ridge. Near the top of this slope, the ridge joins another coming from the northwest. At the junction of these ridges is a notch which splits both ridges from east to west. From this point on climb along the final summit ridge. Go around a large gendarme and stay to the right side until the summit ridge is gained once again. Continue to the summit. The exposure to the east is impressive so exercise caution.
  • Trailhead:

Shepherd's Pass Trailhead - Highway 395 to Independence. Go West on Market Street (towards the Sierra Nevada). Market Street becomes Onion Valley Road once you leave Independence. After 4.4 miles, turn left (south) on Foothill Road. Road forks after about 1 mile, follow the right fork. You will see a sign saying "Shepherd's Pass Trailhead". After about 2 more miles, you reach another fork in the road - go right. Two more forks in the road are reached and you will go right at each one and you'll reach the trailhead for Shepherd's Pass.
