Nakasendo Trail

Hiking the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago

The Nakasendo Trail stretched from Tokyo to Kyoto and was established in Japan's feudal period dating back to the 8th century. Known as "the path through the mountains", there are still unspoilt stretches between post towns, which were resting spots where travelers could partake of a meal, a hot bath, and a night's rest. Both Magome and Tsumago are well-preserved towns in the Kiso Mountains. The hike is not difficult, but the beauty and historically transformative nature of it makes it very unique. The strategy is to arrive in Magome, stay the night at a ryokan, and then the following day drop your baggage at the tourist office in town where they will have your bags transported to the Tsumago tourist office. All you have to carry on the walk is what you would need for an easy dayhike. 7.1 km one-way hike.
