Quick 2 day journey to Mineral King to bag a peak I bonked on 14 years prior. 13.7 miles over 2 days with beautiful weather and perfect conditions. Barely any wind, no clouds, but plenty of marmots! Beta from Mark Jiroch's hike several weeks earlier helped with planning (i.e. no spikes or crampons needed). The initial ascent from the trailhead is a heart pumper, especially with full food/water/backpack. After hiking further into the valley it gets more enjoyable (from a cardio stand point) and you can enjoy the views. Lower Monarch Lake has several good sites for camping (I parked next to the food bin). Enjoyed the rest of day one by acclimating and taking a walk up to Upper Monarch Lake. As the sun set, stars came out in full force. A new moon allowed for a decent star time lapse. Woke early on 6/23 and began the slog up the scree. Was much better than 14 years prior (the acclimation helped). Skirted the ridge on the southerly side and followed some ducks until I peaked. Lakes, snow, clouds, mountains! What a sight!
