Ubehebe Crater

Circumnavigation of Ubehebe Crater

This volcano was formed between 2,000 and 7,000 years ago by large steam eruptions that have left the surrounding landscape looking like the moon.  We did a 2 mile circumnavigation of both the main crater and Little Hebe crater. It is also possible to hike 600 vertical feet to the bottom of the main crater. But, of course, that means 600 ft. back out, so we passed on that opportunity.
  • Trailhead:

From the parking area on Ubehebe Crater Road

  • Difficulty:

Easy circumnavigation as long as it's not too hot.

  • Aesthetic Rating:

Stark landscape that looks like the moon - if you're into that sorta thing you will love it.

  • Distance:

    2 mile round trip

  • Type:

    Dayhike
